  • Keep up the great work!
  • Über das Werk: The photo was taken in mid September 2023 after I had swum the 520km length of the Hudson River and shows me shortly before my arrival in Manhattan for the start of the United Nations General Assembly. I wanted to highlight how it is possible to restore the health of our rivers. This was 60 years after President Kennedy's "Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. At that time the Hudson River was one of the most polluted rivers in the USA and it would have been impossible to swim its length.
  • Lewis Pugh
  • Lewis Pugh is a British endurance swimmer and ocean advocate. He was the first person to complete a long-distance swim in every ocean of the world, and he frequently swims in vulnerable ecosystems to draw attention to their plight. Pugh is best known for undertaking the first swim across the North Pole in 2007 to highlight the melting of the Arctic sea-ice. He followed this up with a swim across a glacial lake on Mt Everest to draw attention to the melting of the glaciers in the Himalayas and the impact the reduced water supply will have on the region. Most recently he swam the 528km length of the English Channel to call for 30% of the world's oceans to be protected by 2030. In 2013 the United Nations appointed him as the UN Patron of the Oceans. Pugh, a maritime lawyer, played a pivotal role in creating the largest marine reserve in the world in the Ross Sea off Antarctica. The media coined the term "Speedo Diplomacy" to describe his efforts swimming in the icy waters of Antarctica and shuttling between the US and Russia to help secure the final agreement on the reserve.
